Area 01

Bowen Therapy

Bowen Therapy is a gentle manual technique: short sets of movements over muscle and fascia, separated by pauses in which the therapist leaves the room or stops entirely. The pauses are not wasted time; they are part of the method.

  • No force
  • Short sessions
  • Deliberate pauses
  • Adults and children

Gentle movements over muscle and fascia, with deliberate pauses between them. No joint manipulation, no force.

There is no joint manipulation, no force is used and no work is done through pain. The movements are made through thin clothing, and a session usually lasts under an hour.

I chose to add Bowen to my practice because it works on ground that clinical medicine reaches only with difficulty: the tension that settled in the body and stayed there after the cause had passed. It is not an alternative to medical treatment; it is something I put beside it.

Who it is for

What people most often come to Bowen with

  • Muscle tension that keeps returning to the same places
  • Discomfort in the back, neck or shoulders
  • Stiffness after long stretches at a desk
  • The feeling of a "braced" body that will not let go even at rest
  • Light sleep on a background of physical tension
  • Slow recovery after exertion or after a demanding stretch
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Allergies
  • Bowel transit problems
  • Insomnia
  • Anxiety
Step by step

How a session goes

  1. The opening conversation

You tell me what brings you, since when, what you have already tried and what conditions or treatments you have. I do not skip this part: I am a doctor before I am a Bowen therapist.

  2. The work itself

You stay dressed, on the table. I make short sets of movements, at set points, with pauses between them. The pauses are deliberate and part of the technique.

  3. The pauses

During them I leave you alone for a few minutes. Many people fall asleep. That is fine, and in fact a good sign.

  4. After the session

I tell you what I noticed, what to watch for over the following days and whether a second session makes sense. The standard advice is to drink water and move normally.

For animals too

Bowen for animals

The same gentle movements, adapted for the animal. It is done without restraint: the animal stays free, and the session stops when it asks for it to stop, not when I have finished my list.

Horses Dogs Cats and others

With animals the technique is done in shorter sessions and with even more pauses. The animal is neither held down nor forced: if it gets up and walks off, that is its pause and we respect it.

The owner stays in the room. They are the one who knows the animal and who notices, over the following days, what has changed in the way it moves, rests or reacts.

What owners come with

  • Stiffness or uneven movement noticed by the owner
  • Slow recovery after exertion, in working horses
  • Discomfort that appears with particular movements
  • Tension you can feel on touch, in the same areas
  • Periods of change: moving house, travel, a new animal in the household

I hold the conversation knowing the ground

I am qualified on the veterinary side as well, so I read the animal's history and the clinic's documents myself rather than taking them by description alone.

No treatment is interrupted

No treatment prescribed by the vet is stopped or changed.

Emergencies do not wait

Injury, acute pain, refusing food, difficulty breathing: straight to the vet or to veterinary emergency care.

Frequent questions

What people ask me before they come

Does it hurt?

No. Bowen is worked gently, through clothing, without joint manipulation and without pressure that would cause pain. If something hurts during the session, you tell me and we stop there.

Why do you leave the room during the session?

The pauses are part of the technique, not an interruption. Time is left between the sets of movements, and my presence in the room does not help during that interval.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on what brings you and how long-standing it is. Usually it becomes clear after the first two or three whether the method suits you. I do not sell long packages up front.

Does it replace my doctor's treatment?

No. You do not stop any prescribed treatment because you are coming for Bowen. In fact I ask you to tell me what you are taking, exactly as in any consultation.

Can it be done with children or older people?

Yes, since it is a gentle technique. As with anything, we first discuss the specific situation and the medical history.

Not sure which approach fits you?

Call and tell me briefly what brings you. If your situation calls for something other than what I do, I will say so in the first conversation.
